If you’ve done “all the things” to try to lose excess weight (particularly abdominal weight), and it hasn’t worked, then you may have “weight loss resistance.” If it’s combined with fatigue in spite of sleeping well, it may actually be your mitochondria that are the root cause of both your tiredness and weight loss resistance.
These are energy-producing factories inside all of your cells, where glucose is turned into the cellular energy ATP (adenosine triphosphate). This is called the citric acid, or Kreb’s cycle.
The Kreb’s cycle needs specific ingredients in order to generate ATP. If any are missing or low, then energy production can be impaired.
Luckily, a simple organic acids urine test can measure this. It can tell you if your mitochondria need more:
- B vitamins
- Lipoic Acid
The professional supplement companies all have mitochondrial support formulas, such as Mitocore. But you don’t know you need these ingredients without testing. Besides missing ingredients for ATP production, the other problem, more serious, is mitochondrial loss and damage.

Aging is out of your control, but you can do something about toxins! You can reduce your toxic burdens and you can improve detoxification.
Toxins from the environment enter primarily through your lungs, gut, and skin. They include medications, chemicals, biotoxins like mold, pathogenic microbes, and components of foods. We are all exposed, it’s part of living on the planet. However, some people do have higher exposures. So, identifying and reducing exposures is a good move for all of us.
You also make toxins inside your body, from stress chemistry, inflammation, byproducts of certain gut microbes, and faulty detox pathways. We all make internal (endogenous) toxins, but some of us make more. Again, identifying and reducing these is a good idea for your mitochondria health.
Toxins create what are called “free radicals” which cause oxidative stress –and this creates mitochondrial damage. You need to make enough glutathione (your body’s master detoxifying antioxidant that quenches free radicals) in order to take care of this oxidative stress, every day. If your toxic burden overwhelms your glutathione production, your mitochondria are in trouble.
Fewer or damaged mitochondria cannot create sufficient ATP. The result is hypo-metabolism.
What does hypo-metabolism feel like?
Hypo-metabolism means low ATP production. The majority of your ATP goes to your liver, brain, and muscles. Therefore, when production is low, this is where you’ll feel it. Symptoms include:
- Unexplained infertility (ovaries have the most mitochondria)
- Poor recovery from exercise
- Inability to exercise
- Feeling run-down
- Relentless fatigue
- Sore muscles
- Sluggish metabolism
- Weight gain, and weight loss resistance
- Sluggish liver detoxification causing a general feeling of malaise
- Chemical and fragrance sensitivity
- Aches, pains, inflammation, fibromyalgia
- Brain fog
- Poor memory and concentration
Some of these symptoms resemble hypothyroidism and adrenal fatigue (HPA dysfunction). Often people come in wanting to test adrenals or thyroid, and both are 100% fine. This is a reason to then use the organic acids test. It will reveal if your mitochondria are damaged, as well as provide clues about your toxic burden, oxidative stress, detox function, and need for glutathione.
How to fix mitochondrial damage
Can mitochondria be fixed? You bet! Can you regenerate mitochondria? You can!
You need amino acids to rebuild your mitochondria. Specifically, you need a high enough dose of free amino acids (including enough tryptophan) to fill your muscular needs, and then have leftover amounts that can feed your mitochondria. You can use these amino acids (3 tsp per day) with 3 capsules of this tryptophan.

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a special fat that mitochondrial membranes need. This naturally occurs in lecithin, which is in egg yolks. You can take PC as a supplement, in which case liposomal forms are the best. Also, you can take lecithin as a supplement, in granules or gelcaps. Lecithin is made from soy or sunflower.
A side note about PC. It emulsifies fat and helps with fat digestion, like how soap emulsifies grease in a pan when you wash it. So, it can help fat digestion. In addition, I use it as a gut-protective supplement with ibuprofen or NSAIDS intake.

Lastly, PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone) is a supplement that may create new mitochondria. PQQ is a co-enzyme, like CO-Q10. Exciting research shows it has the ability to generate new mitochondria. PQQ may regenerate neurons and prevent Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Here’s a nice synopsis of PQQ.
