My favorite test for leaky gut is a blood test for antibodies to zonulin, actin, and LPS (lipopolysaccharides). You can order this on your own inside our free women’s health community, it’s called the “Leaky Gut Panel.”

But I don’t always start out with this test! Basically, if there is active systemic inflammation, whether autoimmune or not, I assume that leaky gut is playing a part, and do some preliminary gut work:

✅ Identify food triggers with a personalized elimination diet
✅ Build in nutrient-dense foods and supplements if needed
✅ Fix any gut microbiome issues

After doing this for a few months, if the inflammation has not cleared, and there is still active inflammation showing up in joints, connective tissue, skin, brain, bladder, or other sites…. then it’s time to test for leaky gut.

This happened to me this morning at the crack of dawn. 🤦‍♀️
.
I see my own functional medicine doctor because

1️⃣ I don’t always want to be my own doctor, nor always bug my functional med doctor friends to consult me on my own health.
2️⃣ I want to have the patient experience - an expert’s eyes on my case, her lab orders, her treatment plans, and the wraparound care that comes with it. Honestly, it’s amazing!
3️⃣ A side benefit is that it’s a learning experience for me to be somebody’s patient. It helps me learn more about curating my own patients’ experience, to adopt the things I like, and swear to not do the things I don’t like!
.
Right now I’m seeing one of the top @instituteforfxmed teachers as my own doctor. I’ll post more about this experience if people are interested. I needed a top hormone specialist and was amazingly fortunate to have this doctor live in my own town so I can see her in person.
.
I literally spent 7 days collecting what felt like a zillion samples to fill 3 test kits. I collected blood, saliva, poop, and a cheek swab for DNA. This was over 7 days. Did I say that already? 🤣
.
This included:
.
✅The @genovadiagnostics GI Effects (5 vials of poop over 3 days) plus a Qtip swab of poop - as if 5 vials weren’t enough. 😂
✅ Their comprehensive Menopause saliva hormone test - which was 10 vials of saliva, one of which I had to collect in the middle of the night! And several at the crack of dawn to test my cortisol awakening response.
✅ Their NutriEval which required a blood draw at the lab, first morning urine (which is what I spilled all over the bathroom floor 🤫), and a cheek swab.
.
I have never had a patient collect this many samples, and it was HARDCORE and complex! The positive thing about using a single lab, and this one in particular, is that they are billing my insurance. Nerd that I am, I’m excited to see the results! And glad that it’s over! That was a project. I still need to do the blood draw, but at least somebody else does that. 😅

I’m at the point now where I just tell people exactly what I would do if I had an autoimmune disease that I could not get into remission.

I’D GET ON A PALEO DIET, ASAP.
.
Which is exactly what I did do…. 25 years ago.
.
I understand the lure of a vegetarian or vegan diet, but what I’ve gleaned in my decades of working with people with autoimmunity, it’s just not a fit.
.
But why?
.
There are many answers to why, enough to fill a workshop. One of them is that not all of us have adapted to handle the newer foods that came into play during the Neolithic agricultural revolution, which was not very long ago in the history of human evolution. These newer crop plants (grains in particular) have a lot of components that easily irritate the gut lining and contribute to leaky gut.
.
You have to address and heal leaky gut to get in remission! This means:

1️⃣Addressing the triggers - like dysbiosis, inflammatory foods (which may include vegan foods with a healthy reputation), stress, medications, and more…
2️⃣Healing the gut lining - with things like vitamins A and D, zinc, EPA and DHA, glutathione, butyrate, probiotics, and more…
.
