A day in the brain of a functional medicine practitioner. We dig deep. We investigate the underlying causes of unresolved unexplained symptoms. We listen. We believe. We don't gaslight. ⁠

I recently took a course in Functional Blood Chemi

I recently took a course in Functional Blood Chemistry, which reminded me of all the cool things we can discover just in someone's bloodwork.⁠

At the beginning of my nutrition and Functional Medicine practice, I loved ordering blood work for folks, as well as interpreting the bloodwork they brought in. It's always been astounding to me how often markers are trending out of range yet conventional docs told people their labs were "normal." At times this happens even when markers are frankly out of the lab reference range, which is never ever "normal."⁠

In those earlier days, I learned about "functional" ranges vs conventional ranges, and how conventional lab ranges are not always optimal. If you're way near the top, or the bottom of a conventional lab range, that is something to look at twice and see if there's meaning in the context of all your other markers.⁠

Blood deficiency is something I consistently see undiagnosed. The first and foremost thing to order for blood deficiency and anemia is a CBC which is a Complete Blood Count.⁠

This checks your Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, and platelets. It's the red blood cells we look at for anemia and blood deficiency. If the number of cells is low, that's an anemia sign. But it doesn't say what kind of anemia.⁠
🩸⁠
The next thing to look at is the size of the red blood cells. If they are small (microcytic), that's a sign it may be iron deficiency and if they are large (macrocytic) it's most commonly a sign of B12 or folate deficiency.⁠

🩸I've been talking about blood lately... what better time of the year is there?🎃 ⁠

We think of blood deficiency as iron-deficiency anemia, which is common for menstruators because they loose blood every month and may not eat enough iron, or may not absorb it well.⁠
.⁠
But did you know there are many types of anemia, with many different root causes?⁠
.⁠
Did you also know that no anemia is good? You need your blood sisters! Your blood circulates your nutrients, hormones, oxygen & glucose (think energy), and warms you up!⁠
.⁠
Good blood flow, volume, and quality are essential for a healthy menstrual flow and to nourish a growing baby in your uterus.⁠
.⁠
We all need da good blood, whether or not we have uteruses, make babies, or have periods.⁠
.⁠
In the next bit of time here I will go over how to assess if you're anemic, and what type of anemia you have. In Chinese Medicine, we call pre-clinical anemia "blood deficiency" which goes well with Functional Medicine where we treat things before they blow up!⁠

Did you know I've been a certified Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® teacher for close to 30 years?

This method is how I take care of my own personal aches and pains and keep my body agile, flexible, and aligned. Recently I've been having a shoulder problem, and because the muscles of the shoulder wrap into the muscles of the neck and spine, I've been having movement restriction and pain in all these areas.
.
These kinds of injuries are often related to the highly personalized movement habits we develop over the course of our lives. For me, I'm left-handed yet I favor my right shoulder as the workhorse for carrying heavy things.
.
Because of my strong habit of over-contracting the muscles in my right shoulder, I occasionally get tension underneath my shoulder blade.
.
The Feldenkrais method is hands-down the most instantaneous and effective way I have found to unwind these habits. So, I revisited an Awareness Through Movement set of six lessons that my partner Seth Paris and I designed back in 2020, called Freeing the Neck and Shoulders. I've been working with the first three lessons in this set and getting immediate relief and change.

My neck and spine feel much freer, which I notice when I turn to look behind myself while driving in the car. A month ago that movement was stuck, and now my neck and spine are moving freely and it feels good to turn and twist. I also notice a difference in the movement of my diaphragm and the freedom of my ribs when I breathe. And, my shoulder is healing!
.
I'd love to share one of these lessons with you. It's an audio recording because in this method you don't watch and copy a teacher; instead, you tune into your own sensations and feelings. 📌 SUGAR - INSULIN
At least 70% of women with PCOS have insulin resistance. PCOS is a type of prediabetes - one that affects sex hormone regulation. This is important for all women to get control of, regardless of fertility desires or age!
.
📌 GUT MICROBIOME
Research shows that disrupted gut microbiota is correlated with PCOS. This can be overgrowths of inflammatory bacteria, yeast, or even parasites. It can also mean a loss of core beneficial bacteria.
.
📌 INFLAMMATION
Inflammation is always a part of PCOS. By definition, PCOS hormone and metabolic disruptions ARE inflammatory. In addition, other sources of inflammation (allergies, autoimmune, infections) also drive PCOS.

📌 CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS
These rhythms are essential for hormones, blood sugar, rejuvenating sleep, appetite signaling, and weight regulation. Women with PCOS are shown to have circadian disruptions. My hair is still drying myself

📌 TOXINS
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals interfere with estrogen signaling and clog up liver detox. With PCOS it’s helpful both to control exposures and to improve detox function.

📌 ADRENALS
Women with PCOS are shown to have adrenal hormone disruption, in particular cortisol and DHEA. You can identify where you fall on this spectrum, and use lifestyle medicine to recover.

As a holistic practitioner, people often assume that I’m anti-medication...⁠

...this couldn’t be farther from the truth, because during my health journey, at times, medication has been pivotal to my healing.🙅🏻‍♀️⁠

However, I learned this lesson the hard way.⁠

When my son was 5 and trying to survive in kindergarten, I was having a really hard time. My postpartum anxiety was triggered and went through the roof.⁠

I had, what I like to call, a nervous breakdown.⁠

📌This went on for months.⁠

Just like with my #rheumatoidarthritis -- I resisted medication because I felt like I would be a failure to not heal myself with natural approaches.🚨⁠

I literally spent my days laying in bed, trying to meditate, and the second I stopped, I would start crying again.⁠
.⁠
👉🏾My mother-in-law, who is very loving and a psychotherapist, was very worried about me and begged me to get on medication.⁠
.⁠
I finally took her advice, and went on medication which was a huge part of stabilizing my nervous system so that the natural healing modalities could work their magic.✨⁠

This experience was humbling to see that Western Medicine does have its place, even in natural health.⁠

So, if you come to me on medications, it’s okay. This is a judgement free zone, as I know they can be absolutely essential to the healing process.⁠
