In my work with women, the clinical goal is for each and every woman to have a healthy menstrual cycle. It’s actually normal to have a healthy cycle, and if you don’t, it's a sign that there are things to fix!⁠

Restoring a healthy menstrual cycle is also the fastest and best way to optimize your fertility and have a successful conception.⁠
.⁠
So, let’s get precise about what defines a healthy cycle, which is our clinical goal for each woman!👇⁠

✴️Your period.⁠
You bleed for four days, with no cramping, clotting or spotting. Your flow needs one tampon, pad, or Diva cup every four hours. You don’t need painkillers, heating pads, or have to miss work.⁠
.⁠
✴️Your basal body temperature.⁠
During your follicular phase (cycle day 1-14) it averages between 97.2 – 97.4. Basal body temperature in your luteal phase (cycle 14-28) averages 98.2 or higher.⁠
.⁠
✴️Your ovulation.⁠
Happens on day 14 with abundant stretchy cervical mucus.⁠
.⁠
✴️Premenstrual.⁠
You have no PMS (breast tenderness, irritability, bloating, etc) and you’re surprised when you start your period if you’re not paying attention to the calendar.⁠

This is when your blood sugar is either too high or too low. It turns out that both low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and high blood sugar (insulin resistance) cause inflammation.⁠

To test for dysglycemia you can do so yourself by purchasing a glucometer and testing your blood sugar before and after meals or by having a lab test for fasting glucose, insulin, hemoglobin A1c, and C-peptide.⁠
.⁠
✴️Food Intolerance.⁠
This is when your adaptive immune system tags food particles as antigens and mounts an attack against them. Truth be told this can happen with any food, but the three most common are arguably gluten, dairy, and eggs.⁠
.⁠
To test for food intolerances, use a reputable blood test that measures immune responses to common foods, like the KMBO Food Inflammation Test. Or, do an elimination and provocation diet.⁠
.⁠
✴️Stress⁠
You make stress hormones as a “fight or flight” response, which is natural. However, this response should settle down when you’re out of danger. When a stressor is prolonged, so is your stress response, which dysregulates your adrenal hormones and causes inflammation.⁠
.⁠
The best test for stress is undoubtedly the Dutch Adrenal test. If your results come back and you find that stress is your trigger, work towards reducing the stress that is in your control⁠
and take adrenal adaptogen herbs.⁠
