I’m back to teaching online Awareness Through Mo I’m back to teaching online Awareness Through Movement® classes again!

Check out this upcoming free class (link in bio).

This class consists of slow and mindful movement sequences done on a padded surface on the floor, from the comfort of your own home. This approach, rooted in the Feldenkrais Method®, lends itself really well to an online format because you don't need to watch or copy a teacher. Rather, you listen to my gentle instructions and cues as you explore your own comfortable range of movement. You can even turn up your volume if you're hard of hearing!
.
Our theme for this class is "Free Your Neck and Shoulders." This class takes place Wednesday, June 29, at 10 am Pacific time. It will be recorded and those who register can have access to the recording. This will be the start of a weekly class that you can take on a monthly basis starting July 6.
.
All you need is an area on the floor in your home where you can move comfortably. This can be on a carpet, blanket, or exercise mat. You need to position your device's camera (computer, phone, tablet) so that your movement area is visible.
.

The stress response is called your sympathetic or “fight or flight” response. When it’s sustained for longer than 10 minutes, then cortisol is secreted as a second responder. Cortisol is amazing, however when it becomes chronically high, it can cause a host of problems, including inflammation, abdominal weight gain (apple shaped body), anxiety, IBS, insomnia, migraine, memory impairment, melancholic depression, PMS, PMDD, and chronic fatigue syndrome. 
.
In the last post I listed many things that research shows to lower the stress response, lower cortisol levels, lower anxiety, and improve happiness and joy. Who wants this? 🙋🏽‍♀️
.
The tricky thing is that the fight or flight response happens automatically, but the relaxation response (parasympathetic, the opposite 
of fight or flight), does not happen automatically. We have to do things to make it happen.
.
Fortunately there are oodles of evidence-based things we can do, many of which are short, easy, pleasurable, and fun.
.
I didn’t talk about emotional freedom technique (EFT) in my last post, but this is another researched technique, effective to immediately calm the autonomic nervous system. It’s based on stimulating acupuncture points with specific affirmations. It may sound woo, but give this five minute video a try and let me know your before and after “anxiety/stress score“ below! In this day and age, many of us are dealing with s In this day and age, many of us are dealing with stress on a daily basis. Stress does impair your energy, mood and immune health! Plus for most of us it just feels awful. Sometimes we can’t change the stressors in our life (although I certainly try to coach my patients to do this whenever possible), but what we can do is mitigate the effects.
.
Uncontrolled stress causes a cascade of undesirable hormones, neurotransmitters, and inflammatory cytokines. In functional medicine we call this “stress chemistry.“
.
Fortunately there are many things backed by research that are shown to shift you out of stress chemistry and into relaxed chemistry (think oxytocin and serotonin and GABA). These studies in particular show the affect on lowering and regulating cortisol.
.
The things on this list are not all inclusive, there are definitely more! For example one of my favorites is acupuncture.
.
It’s important to rotate things like these every day in your life. We all need it! What are your favorites?

In all seriousness, I did strike it rich. I carved out time for a sunny barefoot beach walk with the dogs early this morning before I started my workday. What this gave me was:
.
1️⃣ Pleasurable movement. ❤️
.
2️⃣ Joy (which I get from the dogs and from the ocean). ❤️
.
3️⃣ A mindfulness practice. Mindfulness doesn’t have to be sitting still! You can do moving mindfulness as well. ❤️
.
4️⃣ Music therapy. I had a Spotify playlist in my AirPods. ❤️ 
.
5️⃣ Community. At that hour, it was just fisher people and dog walkers on the beach, so I got to greet lots of locals that I see on the regular.
.
ALL THESE THINGS!
.
These 5 things all have amazing research behind them to improve health, longevity, happiness and stress reduction.
.
I really needed it this morning because I went to bed with anxiety last night. Most of us need nonnegotiable things to do every single day to mitigate the effects of stress in our lives, and to increase mindfulness and joy. Unfortunately we can’t eradicate stress in today’s world, so all we can do is mitigate the effects. Non-negotiable every single day. Especially if you’re like me and tend towards anxiety from time to time. (And by the way you’re not alone because many many women are feeling anxiety these days, for all sorts of reasons.) When it creeps up for me I know that I have to do extra things to tune in and pay attention to the alarm signals my lizard brain is giving me, and remind myself to tune into things like:
.
movement
joy
mindfulness
nature
pets
music
.
These are just some of the things that are shown to mitigate the effects of stress chemistry. The list of all the things is actually quite huge, and it’s a great idea to have many of them cycling through your days. What are you doing today to take a minute or so to tune in, be present, joyful, or calm?

I was pretty bummed that the 🦠 entered our hous I was pretty bummed that the 🦠 entered our house! It’s such an inconvenience and a disturbance of routine, plus feels crappy for the person who has it!

Fortunately my husband has been stellar about quarantining from us. Lucky for him he lives with me and I got him on a giant protocol because I just have all these things around. It makes a huge difference to use the natural supports!
.
This inspired me to go back to the blog post I wrote two years ago about how to support your immune system through the four phases of 🦠. I updated it with new things that we know now, and made it way simpler. He didn’t want to read articles he just wanted to be told what to do, and I’m always happy to provide that.
