So how do you find out if foods are inflammatory f So how do you find out if foods are inflammatory for you? I like to do a combination of the food inflammation test (there are three different levels of this test) by @kbmodiagnostics. I like this test because it measures IgG antibodies plus an immune marker called complement factor. The results I get have been spot on for my patients. However, these tests do need to be interpreted with skill. Foods that light up do not automatically mean that you need to avoid that food forever. If a lot of foods light up, it sheds light on increased intestinal permeability, a.k.a. “leaky gut.”
.
I like to follow the results of this test with a customized elimination diet. This is to tune into how foods affect you. I like the combination because foods can be inflammatory and not show up on the food inflammation test (because they are not immune mediated). And foods can show up on the FIT test that may not be a problem long term. The FIT test helps us design a customized elimination diet.
.
This may seem like an arduous process, and for some people it is, but I’ve specialized in this for 25 years, and I’m an expert in guiding folks through this and making it less daunting.
.
Questions about figuring out if foods are inflammatory for you as an individual?

There are some general principles about anti-infla There are some general principles about anti-inflammatory eating that apply to everyone. One of the most important is choosing the right fats because fatty acid balance can make or break Inflammation for people.
.
But when it comes to inflammation and autoimmunity, an anti-inflammatory healing food plan gets personal. Peoples’ inflammatory reactions to food are individual. This is why I don’t recommend following an anti-inflammatory diet from a book or a website without discovering what’s right for you personally. I often meet people who are eliminating whole food groups based on someone’s book or website (lectins, gluten, dairy, nightshades, etc.).
.
There are theories why these foods may be inflammatory for some people, but they could be fine for you personally! And there could be other foods that are included in a one size fits all anti-inflammatory diet that actually don’t agree with YOU and cause inflammation in YOUR system.

Do you believe health starts in the gut? All tradi Do you believe health starts in the gut? All traditional medicine approaches do. This is especially important for autoimmunity and chronic inflammation. We apply the tried-and-true functional “5R”
gut approach for maximum results. Each step is important, so don’t skip any! This is often a circular rather than a linear process. If you’re having an inflammation flare, revisit these steps! And if you have a chronic condition or an autoimmune diagnosis, do an annual gut health protocol.

Leaky gut is associated with inflammation and auto Leaky gut is associated with inflammation and autoimmunity. But what do you do about it?
.
Typically applying a 5R gut protocol well do the trick to heal leaky gut. This involves repair, remove, re-inoculate, rebalance, and replace. It’s a good framework to work with!
.
With leaky gut, all of the “Rs” are important. But you can’t just jump to repairing it without removing the reasons why it’s there to begin with.
.
Here are known triggers of increased intestinal, permeability (a.k.a. leaky gut):
.
✅ reactions to food antigens
✅ stress!
✅ infections
✅ dysbiosis
✅ intestinal inflammation
✅ impaired digestion
✅ toxins
✅ nutritional insufficiencies
✅ various medications, including NSAIDS and birth control pills
✅ many diseases!
.
OK, what American does this list not apply to? 🤦🏽‍♀️
And we wonder why inflammation is such a rampant problem! 🤦🏽‍♀️
Leaky gut causes inflammation. When you have autoimmunity or chronic, inflammation, working on your gut health goes a long, long way.

dr.lauraparis Hi!👋 I am Laura Paris, and my spe dr.lauraparis
Hi!👋
I am Laura Paris, and my specialty is working with women with chronic inflammation and autoimmunity. I use personalized functional medicine care and anti-inflammatory healing diets to do this. When you give your body and mind the right conditions, healing can happen! However, this path is usually not linear, and it certainly isn’t perfect. It’s real. Keep it real! 👏
.
Why do I specialize in working with women? There’s a handful of reasons:
✅ autoimmunity affects women far more frequently than men
✅ I’ve specialized in women’s hormones (periods, fertility, menopause) for 2 decades, and it’s often at times of hormonal upheaval that autoimmunity show up. This includes puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. The interplay between your hormones and immune system is fascinating and amazing.
✅ my undergraduate education was fine arts and women and gender studies, and I am a passionate feminist.
✅ women tend to be motivated to transform their health, and do the real work more than men – no offense to the men who also do the work!
.
I know some of you out there I’ve worked with, and others follow me from various places. I love to get to know who is here, so please drop me a comment about yourself below or just wave and say hi! 👋
In functional medicine we operate from this princi In functional medicine we operate from this principle - that there are 3 conditions for an autoimmune condition to exist:
.
1️⃣ a genetic predisposition
2️⃣ an original trigger
3️⃣ a leaky gut
.
Now we can’t change genetics, we can’t go back in time and change the original trigger, but what we can do for auto immunity is:
.
✅ make sure the original trigger has been dealt with. The original trigger is often extreme chronic stress, an infection, or an inflammatory reaction to one or more food antigens. When I blew up with autoimmunity, I found out I had an intestinal parasite (Blastocystis hominis), and an egg and wheat sensitivity.
✅ keep ongoing potential triggers at bay. This is the reason why I recommend everybody with autoimmunity do a G.I. map functional stool test every single year to make sure there’s nothing brewing in the gut, and a viral panel to make sure chronic viruses are not reactivated, such as Epstein-Barr. Other triggers can be extreme stress, hormone imbalances (sex, thyroid, adrenal), and poor metabolic health (high blood sugar, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome). There are others but these are the most common.
✅ most importantly, we can pay attention to gut health, and make sure the small intestine lining is robust and not leaky or hyper-permeable! The small intestine is THE organ to keep happy and healthy, in all cases of autoimmunity.
.
This is why gut health (in particular, the small intestine) is so important for auto immune health!
