This is the order! We don’t start with supplemen This is the order! We don’t start with supplements. You can’t reverse autoimmunity with supplements. They are highly useful, but we wait until the fourth step. This is because:

1. We need to see what’s left after the first three steps! For some people that’s all that’s needed.
2. We need to make a proper assessment of which supplements are appropriate for you based on your lab work, history and symptoms. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all auto immune supplement protocol.

This is a conversation I have with each autoimmune patient.

The TRUTH is that it is important to be mindful of gluten. This is because for everyone, gluten increases a protein called zonulin, which loosens the tight junctions between the cells of your gut lining, making it temporarily more permeable.
.
People with autoimmunity are already susceptible to a hyper-permeable gut lining - called “leaky gut” - so it’s prudent to be mindful of gluten intake. However YOU may be able to have moderate exposure and still keep gut lining integrity.
.
But if your immune system actually reacts to gluten (find out if this is true first) it’s important to find out why. If it’s celiac, it’s really important to know, and unfortunately many people go undiagnosed. If not celiac, it can be a wheat allergy or intolerance, a non-celiac gluten intolerance, or a reaction to the fiber (FODMAP). Finding out the type of reaction and what it stems from helps in guiding what you should do with both your diet and treatment plan.

You can see this is more complex than a blanket statement to avoid gluten completely. There are nuances to this conversation.

When we trace back the original trigger of an autoimmune flare or onset, people often realize that it was preceded by massive stress. Not necessarily bad stress, just too much of it! Common massive stressors I see proceeding autoimmune onset include:

🤯Moving
🤯Job changes
🤯 Postpartum struggles
🤯 Illness (including the Rona🦠)
🤯 Difficult family relationship
🤯 Perimenopause mayhem
🤯 Loss of a loved one
🤯 Graduate school
🤯 Suddenly being a caregiver
🤯 Overtraining
.
There are three conditions for an autoimmune disease to occur, and one of them is a trigger. (The other two are genetics and a leaky gut.)
.
How can stress be the trigger? These are two mechanisms:

✅ Stress depresses the immune system, particularly the branches that control autoimmunity (Th1 Warrior and Th17 Troublemaker)
✅ Stress chemistry (high stress hormones) is pro-inflammatory, and the cytokines produced are the ones that can drive autoimmunity!
.
So this means that stress is BOTH pro-Inflammatory AND also blocks your ability to control autoimmunity. Moderate amounts of stress are healthy. But huge stress that goes on and on is a problem. 
.

We do vary the bloodwork order based on the individual. But we want a *fresh* stool test (we love the GI MAP by @dxsolutionslab and have used it consistently eight years now).

A food sensitivity test is so useful, but it must be interpreted with nuance! We really like @kbmodiagnostics Food Inflammation Test - one because it test complement factor, as well as antibodies, and two because the results have matched our client cases quite well for the past eight years. However, sometimes we do use @cyrexlabs.ukeu or @vibrantlabs - Vibrant has some unique panels that zoom in on certain food groups, such as lectins. We like using these tests to help guide us in identifying the best anti-inflammatory eating style for the individual. @phoenix.helix most recent podcast #219 is really useful to listen to you about this topic!
