Research shows an “obese” gut microbiota is different from a “lean” one.
.
It turns out that you can have either:
🦠 Energy-efficient, calorie-consumer bacteria strains
🦠 Or ones that mess with your metabolism and make you fat
.
So how do you know what types of bacteria you have? 🤷🏼‍♀️
.
🧪 Take the right test -- this is the gold standard, but you can also go by symptoms.
.
❓ Do you have resistant weight loss, even though you do “all the right things?”
❓ Do you also have bloating, sluggish bowels, stinky gas, reflux, belching, or frequent diarrhea?
.
These are signs of dysbiosis (an imbalance in gut microbes).
.
🤷🏼‍♀️ What you can do to balance your microbes and cultivate the ones that help make you lean?
.

❌ Too much bacteria in the Firmicutes phylum can shift you towards weight gain. These are the ones you find in most probiotic pills and foods (like raw sauerkraut, miso, yogurt, and kefir).
.
✅ The Bacteroides phylum includes the ones shown to make you lean. These are anaerobic and don’t come in pill form. You have to feed them. It turns out that they like polyphenols, which is a phytochemical found in plants.
.
Where do you get polyphenols?
.
📌 All berries, especially blueberries
📌 All colorful fruits, especially pomegranate seeds and black currants
📌 Nuts and seeds, especially pistachios, hazelnuts and pecans
📌 Beans, especially black and white beans
📌 Chocolate!
📌 Wine in moderation, coffee and black tea

If you have one of the above or another type of autoimmune disease, then I recommend getting this stool test annually...👇🏼

👉🏾 I recommend everyone with an autoimmune disease do an annual functional stool test that provides a comprehensive digestive analysis and microbial evaluation.
.
Then if things are not perfect, get help to treat and fix the problems that are identified until your stool test is perfect.
.
This is a great proactive approach to PREVENT inflammatory gut triggers and AVOID a relapse of autoimmune symptoms. . If you’ve done the hard work of getting in remission (and yes this can be done!), then this annual test can help keep you there!

Many labs offer these tests, and the gold standard is DNA PCR analysis to identify microbes.
.
A few key digestive analysis markers include:
.
🧫 Steatocrit 🔎 Fat in your stool
If you have fat in your stool it means that you are not breaking it down which is a pancreas or liver/gallbladder issue (bile and enzymes). Sometimes the reason for this is stomach pH is off. Did you know that chronic stress lowers stomach pH?
.
🧫 Calprotectin 🔎 Intestine inflammation
This is a really important marker because if elevated, it can mean that an autoimmune process is brewing, particularly a gut autoimmune process like inflammatory bowel disease (colitis or Crohn’s).
.
🧫 Pancreatic enzymes 🔎 Stomach pH
These are frequently low in cases of autoimmunity. Again this could be a sign of stomach pH being off, especially with chronic stress or chronic intake of acid blocking medication.
.
🧫 Secretory IgA 🔎 Immune activity
This measures the activity of your gut immune system, and whether it’s subpar, on target, or hyperstimulated.
